Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Awe is the experience of feeling one’s own existence and smallness when faced with the grandeur of nature or the universe, and it is known to have various positive effects on our mind and body. VR is a suitable means for experiencing awe, and it has been attracting attention in recent years. However, the VR settings that influence the experience of awe have not been sufficiently examined. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the role of the viewpoint in VR in the experience of awe. Specifically, we created two types of VR scenes: a snow mountain scene that contains elements that induce awe, and a neutral scene that does not. We compared two types of viewpoints in each scene: a first-person perspective that enhances presence, and a third-person perspective that emphasizes vastness. The participants explored the VR scenes using a controller, and then answered a questionnaire that measured the degree of awe and the presence of VR. The results showed that the first-person perspective caused stronger awe and presence than the third-person perspective. Our research findings can be used not only to deepen the understanding of awe experiences using VR, but also to design VR applications.
