AR Onomatopoeia Teaching System that Interactively Displays Onomatopoeia by Environmental Sound Recognition

(in English) In recent years, due to the increase in foreign residents and the expansion of social participation among people with hearing impairments, numerous measures have been implemented for their Japanese language instruction. Among these, onomatopoeia presents a significant learning challenge due to its frequent use by Japanese people and the vast variety of expressions. Especially, onomatopoeic words that change with the intensity of actions, such as hitting, require interactive learning methods. Therefore, we have developed a learning system that displays onomatopoeic words as environmental sounds in real-time. We also conducted an experimental study on the learning of onomatopoeic words using this system with foreign students and people with hearing impairments, evaluating the system from the perspective of learning effects. The results of the experiment confirmed that the learning effectiveness was comparable to that of studying with flashcards, and the participants who used the system demonstrated higher reproducibility of onomatopoeia than those who studied with flashcards.
