Strategies to encode non-speech sounds into language: A developmental study

(in English) To discover the progress in adapting phonology in the native language, the current study compared the strategies in verbal imitation of non-speech sounds between Japanese-speaking adults (n=52) and 3-10-year-old children (n= 50). Each participant was asked to listen to non-speech sounds and verbalize them. The responses were recorded for the analysis. The cluster analysis employing machine learning revealed distinctive patterns of verbalization strategy. Some clusters were comprised mostly, or even solely, of adults, and the other clusters were of children, while the remaining clusters were of both adults and children. The findings suggest adults and children use different strategies for verbal imitation of non-speech sounds. This difference may reflect the development for the speakers to adapt to the phonological systems of the language. The authors will focus on what factors in the verbalization contribute to the differences.
