Estimation of mental state using pupillary response during eye contact

(in English) This study aimed to detect mental states such as stress by measuring pupil diameter while participants viewed facial videos with eye contact. The experiment spanned 5 weeks, during which subjective mental states were assessed weekly using both pupil diameter measurements and questionnaires. Objective measures of mental states were also obtained in the first and fifth weeks using salivary amylase and hair cortisol assays. The results revealed that participants' pupils dilated and contracted in response to eye contact or avoidance cues, with faster reactions observed under direct gaze conditions. Furthermore, a negative correlation was observed between salivary amylase levels and the deviations in pupil size. Specifically, the difference in pupil size between direct gaze and avoidance conditions was more pronounced on days when participants had lower salivary amylase levels.
