Toward the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication system, development of high-frequency bands that enable faster transmission speeds and larger capacities is accelerating. However, high-frequency radio waves experience greater path loss than conventional low-frequency radio waves, which constrains the transmission distance. Furthermore, the high directivity of radio waves makes it difficult for user equipments to communicate directly with base stations and access points in environments where there are obstructions such as walls and buildings. Therefore, the formation of radio propagation paths by installing radio wave reflecting surfaces is expected to be the solution. In particular, a device called IRS (Intelligent Reflecting Surface), which consists of many passive reflective elements called metamaterials and can dynamically reflect incoming radio waves in a desired direction, has attracted attention. In this paper, we measure the basic characteristics of IRS in the 60 GHz band and evaluate its effectiveness in forming a radio propagation path. In addition, we measure the transition time required for switching the reflection direction control of the IRS to evaluate its adaptability to time-varying communication environments. |
