[Invited Lecture] Recent Trends in International Standardization of Wireless LAN

(in English) Wireless LAN technology standardized by the IEEE contributed to creating a ubiquitous communication environment when it was installed in personal computers in the early stages around 2000, and became widespread from offices to home environment. Continuously, the IEEE standards were updated with the target of increasing throughput. In the late 2000s, the size of the wireless LAN market rapidly expanded due to the synergistic effect of the introduction of wireless LAN technology into mobile devices such as mobile phones and smartphones, and the emergence of large-capacity content services. Around the end of 2024, IEEE 802.11be, the latest wireless LAN mainstream standard, is scheduled to be approved, and communication performance will be further improved. In IEEE 802.11bn, which is the next generation of IEEE 802.11be, standardization of technology to realize ultra high reliable communication is being developed, with use cases such as AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), robotics that require stricter communication quality than ever before. This paper mainly explains the standardization process in IEEE and the current status of standardization trends for IEEE 802.11be and IEEE 802.11bn.
