Null-space expansion (NSE) has been proposed as a method for multi-user MIMO that is tolerant to the user mobility environment. NSE is performed in the presence of temporal and spatial correlations by using the channel state information (CSI) estimated between the base station (BS) and the user equipment (UE). Interference suppression is achieved even for future channel states that may change due to user mobility. This is achieved by exploiting the enormous spatial degrees of freedom in massive MIMO, where the BS is equipped with multi-element antennas. The effectiveness of NSE has been qualitatively explained, but its principles have not been clearly presented. In this paper, the effectiveness of NSE is discussed based on the beam patterns and sidelobe shapes formed by array antennas in basic antenna arrangements such as line-of-sight propagation environments and linear array arrangements. The conditions for the effective operation of NSE are clarified in relation to the array aperture due to the number of antenna elements. |
