A mechanism for detecting inconsistency between Network Design and Current State based on network ontology Bonsai

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Since there can be inconsistencies between the network design known by the administrator and the actual network configuration due to misconfigurations or configuration changes without design modifications, a method to automatically detect such inconsistencies is useful for network management and operation. For this purpose, four technologies are needed: (i) a machine-readable notation for representing network configurations, (ii) a tool for describing network designs in a machine-read- able notation, (iii) a tool for automatically detecting the current network configuration and describing it in a machine-readable notation, and (iv) a tool for comparing the output generated by (ii) with the output generated by (iii). Already, Bonsai has been proposed for (i) and nc-detect for (iii). In this paper, nc-design, a command-line interface for network design corresponding to (ii), and nc-diff, a tool for verifying the consistency between design and detection corresponding to (iv), have been developed. In this approach, network design is carried out using the Bonsai notation, and by comparing this design with the detected configuration, the consistency between the network design and detection is verified. It was confirmed that nc-design and nc-diff operate as expected in a test network.
