This paper discusses beam design for multi-panel arrays over millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels with stochastic blockages. In current mmWave communication systems, channels are often assumed to be static, and beamforming weights are designed to align with the line-of-sight (LoS) path to maximize received power. However, in actual mmWave channels, stochastic blockages cause channel fluctuations, leading to frequent communication outages, which hinders the widespread use of mmWave systems. This paper investigates beamforming design with a multi-panel array for time-varying channels, where multiple beams are aligned not only to the LoS path but also to non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths to obtain robustness against path blockages. Computer simulations reveal the limitation of conventional beamforming design that relies on maximum power criteria, and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed beamforming approach with a multi-panel array in practical mmWave communications. |
