This paper proposes a method to improve system throughput by applying overloaded communication in downlink Multi-User - Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) from a base station to multiple users and simultaneously transmitting the same number of streams as transmission antennas. Although the proposed method has a very simple configuration, using only a Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (THP) at the base station and a spatial filter and amplifier at the receiver, it enables each user to transmit and demodulate the number of streams equal to the number of transmitting antennas. Characteristics have been evaluated by computer simulation, and it is shown that significant improvements can be achieved by applying lattice reduction to the precoding. Compared with a typical conventional system using the Block Diagonalisation (BD) method, in which the number of transmitted streams is reduced to the null-space dimension of each channel, the proposed method can double the throughput with a gain of about 13 dB at BER$=10^{-4}$ for two users. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed method can triple the throughput for three users, although there is a degradation of about 3 dB at BER$=10^{-4}$. |
