A sub-THz band is expected to play an important role in extreme high-data-rate transmission of sixth-generation mobile communications. In this frequency band, beamforming using array antennas with many elements is an essential technique to compensate for very large propagation losses. To achieve higher data rate in the sub-THz band, it is important to improve frequency utilization efficiency with MIMO spatial multiplexing in addition to using its wide bandwidth. On the other hand, it has been reported that the number of multipaths is small in sub-THz-band indoor propagation environments, which may limit the effect of spatial multiplexing with MIMO systems. In this paper, the characteristics of MIMO spatial multiplexing in the sub-THz band are evaluated by computer simulations, assuming office and factory environments. The results show that channel estimation errors due to noise have a significant impact on the transmission characteristics of MIMO spatial multiplexing. However, when two proposed measures to reduce channel estimation errors are applied, MIMO spatial multiplexing is confirmed to achieve higher channel capacity than single-layer transmission. This paper also reveals that factory environments have a higher spatial multiplexing effect than office environments. |
