In vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications used in use cases such as automated driving and remote monitoring, the amount of data collected for the use cases is sometimes large because of the visual data. One of the challenges of millimeter wave communications in V2X is the need to deal with blockage, which occurs frequently because both the communication terminal and the obstacle move at high speeds.
Several handover and beamforming methods has been studied that reduce the blockage effects by predicting blockage in advance. For example, there are techniques such as blockage prediction and avoidance by learning time-series of the received power of beams, or designing optimal beamforming using information of the blockage probability.
This paper deals with the blockage at the link between a vehicle and a roadside unit at an intersection. Although the aforementioned previous studies show excellent performance in each use case, it needs to be verified whether the methods are also appropriate for intersection scenarios. Therefore, toward the practical application of blockage prediction and avoidance in a realistic intersection environment, this paper evaluates and analyzes the blockage effects in the intersection scenario by computer simulation. |
