Study on IRS Control Using Vision-Assisted Beam Management in Sub-Terahertz-Band Communications

(in English) Extreme highspeed transmission over 100 Gbps is expected in 6G mobile communication system using a sub-Terahertz band of 100–300 GHz. In order to overcome large propagation losses behind an obstacle, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) attract much attention. A beamforming technique can be used for adjusting phase-shift devices connected to reflecting elements. A codebook contains beam candidates, and we choose the optimum beam giving the largest received power. This is carried out sending pilot symbols. If an IRS has many reflecting elements, the codebook has many beams, and it will take long time to find the optimum beam. This paper proposes a method to reduce the number of beams that we need to use in the codebook. A camera is mounted on an IRS, and it takes a picture in the area where the IRS covers. We assume that a person has user equipment (UE). We apply an object detection algorithm, YOLO, to the camera image, and we detect a person. YOLO produces a bounding box that encloses the person. Because the UE is in the box, we need only to examine the beams in or around the box. It has been shown by experiments that we can reduce the number of beams by about 7% or 10% compared with an exhaustive search.
