Conventional optical lenses only have one focal point, and compound lens systems that have multiple lenses and mechanical actuators are used in lens modules to focus objects at near to far distances although the camera modules with these systems tend to be bulky and have a low time response. Electrically-controllable varifocal lenses will accelerate the development of compact-size photographic devices with a high-speed response. We developed ultrasound varifocal liquid crystal lenses, that consist of a liquid crystal layer between two glass discs and an ultrasound transducer, where the orientation of nematic liquid crystal molecules can be controlled by the acoustic radiation force. The lenses can change the refractive index distribution and its focal length by ultrasound vibration by utilizing both high liquidity and optical anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal molecules. In this report, we fabricated ultrasonic liquid crystal lenses and applied sinusoidal and square waves of the resonant frequency to the lenses to investigate the effects of the input waveform on their optical characteristics. It was found that the optical characteristics exhibited by the cases with the sinusoidal- and square-wave drives were largely similar, although slight differences were observed in the vibrational distributions on the lens substrate, suggesting that the lens can be controlled by a square-wave drive. |
