Exploration of postural sway indices reflecting intermittency in neural feedback control during quiet stance for assessing postural impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease

(in English) The function of static standing posture is quantified using center of pressure (CoP) time series data. Our research group developed a dynamic model of postural control, successfully applied to CoP data from young healthy individuals, elderly healthy individuals, and Parkinson's disease patients. This model could map data into parameter space points of the model, leading to a classification of subjects into intermittent control (young healthy), active continuous control, or passive continuous control (elderly and Parkinson's patients) by means of a data assimilation technique. In this study, we re-analyzed the same data set used in our previous study with the data assimilation, and found that active and passive continuous control groups had higher UPDRS part-III scores for posture and gait than the intermittent control group, indicating utility of the model for evaluating Parkinson's disease. We then identified several model-free CoP sway indices, such as the median power distribution of the CoP power spectrum, that were capable of classifying the subjects in an equivalent manner with the one obtained by the data assimilation, without the high computational cost of data assimilation.
