Small objects can be trapped and manipulated by an ultrasound standing wave, and this technique is expected tobe applied to noncontact transportation and measurements of physical properties of liquids. In this report, effects of changes in the intensity of airborne ultrasound standing waves on the behavior of levitated droplets were investigated. The experimental system consists of a vibrating disc with four bolt-clamped Langevin-type transducers and a circular reflector, resulting in an acoustic standing wave between them. The distance between the vibrating disc and reflector was adjusted to maximize the sound
pressure amplitude of the standing wave and trap a droplet without contact. The behavior of the levitated droplets was observed using a high-speed camera with the application of an amplitude-modulated signal to the transducers. It was found that the resonance frequency of the levitated droplet was dependent on the material properties and the droplet, suggesting that this
phenomenon can be applied to measurement techniques of material properties. |
