Measurement results of septum polarizer consisting of circular-to-rectangular converting waveguide

(in English) A septum polarizer is one of the waveguide components that separates two orthogonal polarizations, and is often used in satellite communication antenna feed systems. It has the advantage of being able to achieve a good axial ratio without using a complicated polarization networks. However, when connecting to a horn antenna consisting of a circular waveguide, a circular-to-square waveguide converter is required, and there is a problem of lengthening the axis by that amount.
Therefore, we propose a septum polarizer consisting of circular-to-rectangular converting waveguide. Since a circular-to-square waveguide converter is not required, it is possible to shorten the axis. In addition, by sawing the side shape of the septum, the effect of making the outer wall a circular-to-rectangular conversion structure is compensated, and better axial ratio characteristics are realized.
Here, we report on the evaluation and verification of the proposed septum polarizer by
prototype. The design target was the K band for satellite communications. In addition, a metal 3D printer (aluminum alloy) was used for prototyping. The tapered circular-to-rectangular conversion structure of the proposed configuration is difficult to process by cutting, but it is easy to process with a 3D printer. As a result of the measurement, reflection of 30 dB, isolation of 30 dB, axis ratio of 0.2 dB, and of XPD 40 dB were obtained at a specific bandwidth of 13% in the K band, confirming the usefulness of the proposed configuration..
