An image recognition system using an optical filter has been proposed to reduce computational resources and power consumption in image recognition. The recognition results represent the irradiance of the output image.
However, the diffractive optical element has a large number of pinholes irregularly located on the surface of the filter, and the pinhole sizes are comparable to the illumination wavelength; therefore, efficient computation based on a vector electromagnetic analysis is required.
In this study, the optical system is numerically simulated by ray tracing based on geometric optics for the lens part and a vector scattering matrix based on the finite-difference frequency-domain method for the optical filter. As the scattering matrix is significantly large, an algorithm using an interpolation process is applied to enable efficient computation. |
