Estimating nighttime population and daytime population using location registration information from mobile phone operators

(in English) There is a problem with the national census, which is that it takes time from the survey to the publication. For example, in the large-scale census carried out in 2020, the basic aggregation of population and other factors was published on November 30th 2021, and the aggregation of population and employment status by workplace and school commuting area was published on July 22nd 2022. On the other hand, by statistically analyzing the location registration information obtained by mobile phone operators in real-time in order to provide communication services, it is possible to calculate a more flexible estimated population. In this article, we propose a method for calculating the estimated population divided into four quadrants at a specific time in each prefecture, city, and town, using estimated nighttime and daytime locations, as well as current locations.
