In wireless power transfer systems for electric vehicles, the systems need to detect the intrusion of foreign metal objects and stop the power supply, as there is a fire risk if such objects enter the systems. To address this, we have comprehensively investigated a method to detect foreign metal objects by extracting changes in Wi-Fi CSI (Channel State Information). A Wi-Fi transmit and receive antenna is placed under the vehicle body. If a foreign metal object enters under the vehicle body while communicating with the antenna, our proposed system detects the intrusion using the change of CSI. To ensure the accuracy of detecting changes in CSI, we have meticulously considered the number of transmit and receive antennas and their placements must be carefully considered. In this paper, we have thoroughly investigated the change in detection accuracy of foreign metal objects in two different placements to clarify the most effective antenna placement. The results confirm that changing the antenna placements makes the detection range wider. This outcome demonstrated the robustness and reliability of our proposed method in terms of a wide range of areas in which foreign metal objects can be detected. |
