[Short Paper] Population Estimation System from LEO using Smartphone Emitted WLAN signals

(in English) Japan has suffered damage from earthquakes many times, including the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. There is a 90% probability that a Nankai Trough earthquake, a disaster of a magnitude greater than the Great East Japan Earthquake, will occur within the next 40 years, making it imperative to establish damage control measures to prepare for the coming catastrophe. When a disaster strikes, the most important thing is rapid rescue operations. However, both material and human resources for rescue are limited. Therefore, if the population in the affected area can be estimated, it will be possible to allocate appropriate resources according to the number of victims who require rescue, which will facilitate and accelerate rescue activities and reduce human suffering. In this study, we propose a population distribution estimation system using a low earth orbit satellite (LEO) and a smartphone, and verify the feasibility of the system. The results of numerical analysis under ideal conditions suggest the feasibility of the system.
