Experimental Evaluation of Air-Ground Spectrum Sharing Scheme Based on Nullforming Techniques

(in English) High-altitude platform stations (HAPSs) have attracted significant attention as a leading technology to provide an extended coverage in mobile communications. For achieving the air-ground spectrum sharing, a nullforming-based interference reduction scheme has been developed, where a cylindrical array antenna mounted on the aircraft forms a null in the direction of each terrestrial base station (BS) located inside the HAPS service area. However, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies on the practical implementation of the air-ground spectrum sharing scheme based on nullforming techniques. Therefore, its performance in a real environment has not been revealed. In this study, we implement the nullforming scheme on the 5G-based cylindrical array antenna system which we have developed. In addition, we evaluate its performance through a field trial where an aerial BS on a tethered balloon with the cylindrical array antenna and a terrestrial BS share a common frequency band. Experimental results demonstrate that our scheme improves the throughput of the terrestrial BS by up to 2.6 times by reducing the interference, where no large degradation can be observed in the throughput of the aerial BS.
