The Gaussian function is used in various situations for image processing filters, such as calculating the kernel weights.
This Gaussian function uses exponential arithmetic, which has a higher computational cost than basic arithmetic operations.
Vector operations and table look-up processing speeding up its computation, and fast libraries that implement transcendental functions using basic arithmetic instructions are available.
However, in the case of bilateral filters and adaptive Gaussian filters, where the weights change dynamically, the table to be referenced changes depending on the pixel position, so it is not possible to perform vector referencing with a simple load instruction, and it is necessary to use the more costly instruction of vector addressing.
Therefore, we propose a method to accelerate the calculation of Gaussian functions using an approximation calculation based on the definition of the Napier number, and compare it with a SIMD arithmetic implementation.
We then confirm its effectiveness by applying it to bilateral filters, which change the calculation process according to the value of the spatial kernel, and to adaptive Gaussian filters, in which the parameters change for each pixel. |
