Design of Multi-Panel Array Over Time-Varying Millimeter-Wave Channels

(in English) This study studies beamforming design utilizing multi-panel arrays for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, accounting for channel fluctuations arising from user equipment (UE) mobility and path blockages. Current commercial mmWave systems deploy sharp beams aligned with the line-of-sight (LoS) path to maximize received power under static channel assumptions. However, in practical scenarios, UE mobility and random path blockages cause temporal channel fluctuations, rendering conventional sharp beam designs flawed for ensuring stable communication. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multi-beam design scheme wherein each panel of a multi-panel array is independently controlled, aligning beams with multiple paths, including both LoS and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths. Computer simulations show the limitation of conventional sharp beam design in time-varying environments and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-beam design, enabling reliable mmWave communications.
