In recent years, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications, exemplified by Starlink, have been rapidly developing. Related research has indicated the potential for frequent link quality fluctuations in Starlink due to handovers. However, because the communication processes within Starlink are proprietary, evaluations have been limited to end-to-end testing, leaving the impact of satellite selection on communication performance unclear.
In this study, we recreated the Starlink environment using the ns-3 LEO module and proposed a method for selecting satellites capable of providing longer communication durations. We investigated the impact of this selection method on communication performance. Simulation evaluations demonstrated that the proposed method could increase communication duration by up to 73.2%. However, the results also highlighted the necessity of considering both satellite altitude and application requirements for optimal performance. |
