Image overlay uplink screen camera communication using DNN-based screen detection and correlation-based preamble detection

(in English) Image overlay uplink screen camera communication that transmits high-speed data without visual obstruction while displaying the received image on a liquid crystal display (LCD) has been investigated using LED backlight modulation of a small LCD and a rolling shutter camera. In this study, a new method has been investigated that can demodulate data even when the transmitting screen appears in part of the receiving camera image as the transmitter moves. As methods for screen detectionand preamble detection when pulse position modulation (PPM) backlight and image overlay screen are captured as part of the receiving camera image, methods using object detection deep neural network (DNN), decision threshold, and correlation are compared. It has been shown that object detection DNN is the most suitable for screen detection, and correlation is the most suitable for preamble detection.
