Prototype blockchain oracle using Chainlink and investigation of bottleneck factors in smart contract execution

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In the realm of blockchain technology, the oracle problem, which denotes the inability of smart contracts to directly access external data, represents a significant challenge. To address this issue, Chainlink, a decentralized oracle network, has garnered considerable attention. Chainlink facilitates a secure and reliable environment for smart contracts to access external data by aggregating information from multiple trusted data sources. This study presents a prototype blockchain oracle utilizing Chainlink to provide aircraft movement data. Initially, a single-node oracle was implemented, and the data retrieval time from an API providing aircraft latitude, longitude, and altitude information was measured. The measurement process involved recording the time taken for the data to be transmitted from the external API through the oracle node to the smart contract. Furthermore, the study examined the impact of varying the number of data points and oracle node settings on the data retrieval time. Comparative experiments were also conducted on two different blockchain platforms, Ethereum and Avalanche, to analyze their respective performances. The results revealed that data retrieval on the Ethereum Goerli testnet took an average of approximately 13 minutes, whereas on the Avalanche Fuji testnet, the retrieval time was significantly reduced to an average of about 6 seconds, demonstrating a marked improvement in processing speed. These findings indicate that the processing time of oracle networks utilizing Chainlink is dependent on the characteristics of the blockchain platform employed.
