Cell Height and Particle Size Effects on Velocity Fluctuations for Submicron and Micron Particles

(in English) Micron-sized particles settle under the effect of their own weight, and their velocity fluctuates due to hydrodynamic interactions during sedimentation. This mechanism is significantly different from that of thermally fluctuating nanoparticles, and the distance over which the interaction works is surprisingly long-range and cooperative, spanning millimeters. Dynamic ultrasound scattering is expected to be a method to calculate particle size from velocity fluctuations in addition to the Brownian motion of nanoparticles, but determining the interaction over a cell size is an important issue to be considered for accurate particle size evaluation. In this study, velocity fluctuations are measured by dynamic ultrasound scattering and the effects of cell height and particle size are discussed in relation to the collective motion of particles.
