Zeta potential is a measure of stability of particle dispersion, and has been evaluated by electrophoretic light scattering (ELS) method. Though the optical methods allow us to measure the zeta potential of nanoparticle accurately, visible light is difficult to transmit in concentrated suspension containing micron-sized particles. Furthermore, it was difficult to evaluate the electrophoretic velocity stably due to sedimentation of micron-sized particles. Thus, electrophoretic ultrasound scattering (ESS) method, a new zeta potential evaluation method using MHz ultrasound has been developed in our laboratory. So far, the zeta potentials of micron-sized particles obtained by the ESS method were compared with the ELS method and titration, but detailed verification of sedimentation effects was not carried out. In this study, by increasing viscosity of the solvent to control the sedimentation velocity, the validity of zeta potentials obtained by the ESS and the ELS measurements was investigated. |
