Multiband WDM transmission technology utilizing wavelength conversion Tomoyuki Kato (Fujitsu) OCS2024-19 |

Extending the optical spectrum beyond the conventional C+L bands is crucial to meet the ever-growing capacity demands of fiber-optic networks. Wavelength conversion technology has the potential to play a pivotal role in this extension by overcoming wavelength constraints and enabling efficient use of the extended bandwidth. This paper reviews inter-band wavelength conversion technologies and their applications in multi-band wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. It discusses the practical considerations and challenges of constructing multi-band WDM systems and provides an overview of recent advances in various wavelength converters, including highly nonlinear fibers and periodically poled lithium niobate planar waveguides. Additionally, the paper introduces a method for enabling sequential shifts to new spectral bands by integrating wavelength band converters into existing transmission systems. These advancements are expected to drastically improve network capacity and flexibility, significantly contributing to the advancement of optical communication technology. |
