A Preliminary Study on Overlapping Utterances in Dialogue Robot Systems

(in English) In Dialogue Robot Competitions and Dialogue System Live Competitions, the use of generation-based dialogue systems has increasingly enabled natural conversations. However, a major issue is the inability to accurately detect the end of the user's utterance, leading to excessively long pauses or speech collisions. While taking appropriate pauses and demonstrating attentive listening is considered polite behavior, in close relationships, a quick exchange of speech or occasional interruptive speaking may contribute to increased dialogue satisfaction. To date, there has been little research on dialogue systems that respond quickly or produce overlapping utterances. This study aims to develop a dialogue system capable of interrupting the user during their speech and examine its impressions and effects. The goal is to contribute to the realization of more natural and satisfying dialogue robot systems.
