Observation of long-range propagating underwater acoustic waves using cabled ocean bottom seismometers

(in English) In addition to seismic waves such as P waves and S waves that propagate on the seafloor or under the seafloor, it is known that underwater acoustic waves that propagate through the SOFAR channel called T waves or T-phases are observed as signals associated with earthquakes that occur in ocean areas. In the earthquake that occurred near Torishima Island on October 9, 2023, T waves, which have an extremely large amplitude compared to P waves and S waves, were observed with seismometers that are installed not only on the seafloor but also on land. Some ocean bottom seismometers detect signals that are presumed to be reflected waves are also observed for an hour after the direct T-waves arrived. The characteristics of long-distance underwater propagation waves observed during this event, including estimation of the source of reflected waves are reported.
