Blind Self-Interference Canceller with Differential Delay for Backscatter Communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Backscatter communications are extremely energy-efficient communication scheme, wherein a backscatter device (BD) equipped with passive radio frequency (RF) receives signals transmitted from a communication device (Node A) to a terminal such as a smartphone, and reflects/absorbs the signals for Node A to receive the signal from the BD. However, during this process, Node A receives not only the desired signal, which is the reflected signal from the BD, but also its own transmitted signal with a much higher power level as self-interference (SI). Therefore, similar to in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communications, SI cancellation is essential. One SI cancellation method in IBFD is active SI canceller (ASIC), which creates a replica of the SI signal, and then subtracts it from the received signal. However, the replica generation requires accurate and periodic channel state information (CSI) acquisition, which is inefficient in Internet of Things (IoT) communications, where communication requests occur randomly. To address this issue, differential active SI canceller (DASIC) without requiring prior CSI acquisition of SI has been proposed in the context of Bluetooth low energy (BLE)-based IBFD communications. In this paper, inspired by the above work, we theoretically show that DASIC is effective for SI cancellation in backscatter communications, and then show its validity through computer simulation.
