[Special Talk] Lunar Communications Architecture Study and R&D for Luna-Earth Optical Communication

(in English) Japan has been participating in Artemis Program which is U.S.-initiated international manned lunar exploration program and aims to achieve sustainable lunar exploration with lunar resource utilization, construction of manned lunar base and so on. Since lunar exploration activities are expected to expand in the future, international coordination on lunar communications and navigation is ongoing to ensure interoperability so that it can be used lunar communications and navigation system as a common infrastructure. We have been conducting architecture study for lunar communications, and research and development for long-distance optical communication between the moon and the Earth. This paper describes JAXA’s concept and initiatives which will ensure superiority and make a unique contribution to the international development and utilization of lunar communication infrastructure.
