In regions where terrestrial networks are vulnerable or during disasters requiring emergency communications, integrating Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with 5G networks is highly promising. Effective integration requires control methods tailored to the communication characteristics of both systems. One approach is cross-layer congestion control that adapts to the periodic quality fluctuations specific to LEO. Previous research identified that the communication quality of LEO satellites, such as Starlink, fluctuates on a 15-second cycle, leading to the ineffectiveness of CUBIC-TCP congestion control. To address this, we proposed a new “cross-layer TCP congestion control.” However, implementing this control requires solving two challenges: (1) accurately detecting cycle boundaries and (2) predicting or estimating bandwidth fluctuations within each cycle. This study proposes an outlier detection-based algorithm for cycle boundary detection and a bandwidth estimation method based on packet arrival times at cycle boundaries. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed cycle boundary detection algorithm and the accuracy of the LEO-based Sbandwidth estimation method using real-world data, and assesses the improvements achieved by the proposed congestion control method. |
