Domain Decomposition with Voronoi Diagrams in Distributed Virtual Space

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The use of large-scale virtual spaces using Digital Twin (DT) has attracted attention, and the "Virtual Singapore" project uses a 3D model that accurately reproduces the entire city of Singapore for urban planning, traffic management, disaster prevention, and other purposes. In order to construct a large-scale virtual environment linked to real-world DTs, it is expected that enormous amounts of computational processing will be distributed among multiple multi-access edge computing (MEC) servers. Such a distributed virtual space can be constructed and operated by integrating multiple partial virtual spaces constructed by each MEC server in real time, appropriately reflecting the information in the physical space. In this paper, we propose a region partitioning method for constructing distributed virtual spaces that takes into account real-time synchronization among partial virtual spaces. In the proposed region partitioning method, the target region is partitioned using a Voronoi diagram to realize real-time synchronization among partial virtual spaces, and MEC servers are placed in each region considering the synchronization strength conditions of DTs. The proposed method formulates an optimization problem to minimize the variation of environment synchronization time in the sub-virtual space, and derives the solution using a genetic algorithm to construct an appropriate sub-virtual space. We investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method by evaluating its performance on numerical examples.
