When do you read the text? Statistical analysis of viewing time of Wikipedia articles

(in English) The internet is replete with a diverse array of content that users engage with according to their individual life cycles. Media outlets generate revenue based on view counts, making it essential to comprehend the temporal dynamics of both content and user interests to boost these numbers—a key business objective.
This study introduces a methodology using Wikipedia article summaries and viewing logs to investigate the temporal characteristics of article content and user preferences. Initial findings reveal that articles within clusters of similar content exhibit similar viewing patterns. The research further establishes viewing trends for each article over time, employing Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to delineate the temporal traits of various user groups. This analysis confirms that these patterns correspond to intuitive life cycles, and that articles sharing similar viewing trends also share similar meanings. These findings underscore a significant correlation between article content and viewing trends, suggesting that viewing patterns can be directly predicted from article content using neural networks. While this research is centered on Wikipedia articles, the simplicity of the approach allows for its application to any content with accessible viewing logs.
