An Investigation of Electrical Stimulation Parameters for Presenting a Fine Pressing Sensation in Mid-Air Tactile Feedback

(in English) In this study, we propose a method for presenting a highly precise pressing sensation of virtual key switches using electrical stimulation. This method involves controlling the current to mimic the force curve of a model key switch. It has been previously demonstrated that combining transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) on extensor muscles and TES on the finger pad can present the sensation of collision in mid-air. However, electrical stimulation that can replicate the intricate tactile feedback of actual key switches has yet to be realized. Based on the hypothesis that electrical stimulation mimicking the steep changes in a force curve contributes to improving the consistency with the pressing sensation of actual key switches, this study focuses on two types of current values intended for bottoming out and releasing the key switch. In the experiment, three levels of intensity were presented for each current value, and the consistency of the pressing sensation and user preference were investigated. The results identified conditions that provided superior average performance compared to others. Additionally, the findings suggest that due to significant individual differences, it is preferable to select the optimal current value for each user.
