We are developing a hierarchical lossless image coding scheme using cellular neural networks (CNNs) as image predictors. This scheme employs CNNs to predict divided images and adaptive arithmetic coding of the prediction errors using multiple probabilistic models.CNNs are inherently only capable of predicting a single color channel, making it challenging to apply them to coding RGB color images. Therefore, our conventional methods improve coding efficiency by converting RGB color to YCoCg-R color space. On the other hand, it is essential to use the inter-channel correlation of RGB color images for further performance improvement. For a fundamental RGB color image coding study, we propose a hierarchical lossless RGB image coding method using color difference prediction in this study. The proposed method achieves high image prediction performance by generating R--G and B--G color difference images using the coded G channel image and adaptively switching the predictor according to the contour direction of the color difference image as the prediction target. |
