Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the brain (E/I balance) significantly influences cognitive functions and sensory processing. The E/I balance, primarily regulated by PV (Parvalbumin) neurons maturing during the critical period, shifts in mental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. In patients with a high E/I ratio, two prominent features are observed: excessive spontaneous firing activity and reduced responsiveness to stimuli. This study utilizes a simplified model of a pair of coupled excitatory and inhibitory neurons to analyze the characteristics of CCI (Chaos-Chaos Intermittency, the intermittent transition between multiple separated attractors) and evaluates the impact of E/I balance variations on spontaneous firing and stimulus response properties. The results indicate that an increase in the E/I ratio enhances transitions between attractors, with the system's instability index showing a nearly monotonic rise. Additionally, in terms of stimulus response properties, increasing the E/I ratio leads to a gradual weakening in the system’s synchronization to input signals. These findings highlight the critical role of E/I balance in regulating the stability and responsiveness of neural circuits.
