The output signals of radio frequency (RF) amplifiers and other devices used in wireless systems vary in amplitude and phase depending on the amplitude of the input and output signals due to the distortion characteristics of the circuit. Quadrature modulation consisting of I (in phase) and Q (quadrature phase) signals is often used in wireless systems. The nonlinear characteristics of the RF amplifier distort the quadrature modulation signal, resulting in degradation of the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR). AM-AM (amplitude-amplitude) and AM-PM (amplitude-phase) of the circuit are obtained by circuit simulation. In this report, we present a method to calculate signal distortion using the probability density function of the amplitude of the input signal as a simple way to check distortion characteristics without using such system simulation. In particular, the case of amplitude-phase distortion in the circuit is discussed. |
