Basic Study of SVD Applied on A-lines Optical-resolution Photoacoustic Microscope for Signal Extraction

(in English) The optical-resolution photoacoustic microscope (OR-PAM) is renowned for its label-free visualization of intracellular biomaterials, such as melanin in red blood cells. While OR-PAM typically requires signal averaging to achieve a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), this compromises imaging speed. This study explores singular value decomposition (SVD) as a tool for extracting photoacoustic signals from low-quality data acquisition by leveraging spatio-temporal features present across spatially scanned A-lines. Simulated noise result demonstrated that SVD can effectively separate signal from noise, even under extreme conditions at 2 dB SNR. This underscores SVD's potential to enhance OR-PAM by enabling reliable signal extraction, leading to faster and safer imaging. However, the structure of the features yielded by SVD was found to be uncertain depending on noise levels. Therefore, future research should focus on developing a more robust method for extracting photoacoustic-related features that accounts for this variability.
