Contribution of components in texture statistics to liquidness perception

(in English) Material properties and quality (Shitsukan) can be estimated from texture of an object's surface. Texture statistics (PS statistic) that mathematically approximate the texture information can synthesize images with textures similar to the original. While surface texture and glossiness are recognized as static material properties, dynamic material qualities, such as liquidness or viscosity, can also be estimated. Liquidness can be inferred from the spatial patterns of motion vectors, and the sensation of liquidness strongly correlated with the spatial continuity of these vectors. However, spatial continuity alone approximates liquidness and cannot fully represent dynamic material properties.
In this study, we conducted psychophysical experiments to determine whether dynamic textures can be synthesized using PS statistics by treating the motion vectors as textures. Additionally, we manipulated specific variables within the PS statistics to assess the contribution of each explanatory variable. Psychophysical experiment revealed no significant difference in discrimination performance between original stimuli and synthesized patterns. However, discrimination performance declined when both the linear and non-linear components of the PS statistics were removed, while removing only the non-linear component had no effect. These results suggest that the perception of liquidness can be approximated by PS statistics, and that the linear component may play a critical role in representing liquidness perception.
