Effects of position and size of a neighboring surface on the perception of change in surface orientation induced by luminance change

(in English) Humans perceive shapes of objects from shading. In other words, humans perceive spatial change of surface orientation from spatial change of surface luminance. Our previous study reported that temporal change of surface orientation was seen from temporal change of surface luminance. In the present study, we investigated whether the position and the size of an adjacent surface affect the perception of change in surface orientation induced by luminance change. The perceived change in orientation of the test surface (1) was large when the adjacent surface adjoined the test surface and (2) increased as the adjacent surface got larger. These results suggest that the perception of change in surface orientation induced by luminance change can be affected by the position and the size of an adjacent surface.
