This lecture will discuss the depth enhancement effect observed in two-dimensional images such as photography, painting, and line drawing, as well as in stereoscopic transparent images. Placing a frame at a distance from the image can enhance the apparent depth of the contents. This phenomenon is known as the frame effect and is considered a plastic effect. The plastic effect has been known since the 18th century. The effect can be explained by assuming that the visual system integrates depth-cue information, depending on its reliability in the cue integration process. This lecture will also examine the validity of the reliability hypothesis to explain the frame effect and discuss the future direction of the research. |
