Proposal and Implementation of A Monitoring System for Elderly Living Alone Using Radar Sensors

(in English) In Japan, the number of elderly people living alone is increasing, and the demand for monitoring systems for these people is growing.
Previous studies have developed monitoring systems using pyroelectric infrared motion sensors.
However, these motion sensors are unable to detect subtle body movements, making them unsuitable for monitoring during sleep.
In this study, we added a radar sensor to the monitoring system to enable sleep monitoring.
The system was installed in the homes of elderly people living alone, and field experiments were conducted to estimate sleep time and compare the estimates with actual measurements.
The experimental results showed that the sleep time estimates obtained using the radar sensor were superior to those obtained using motion sensors.
In addition, the introduction of the radar sensor ensured the detection of individuals during sleep.
