Fiber Raman amplifiers (FRAs) using transmission lines as amplification media are known to achieve longer transmission distances than erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) in principle, because they enable distributed amplification. However, high pump power is required, and all-FRA systems are hard to implement in practice. Therefore, EDFA/FRA hybrid systems may be a practical solution for long haul transmission. This study theoretically investigates the quantum-limited transmission distance of hybrid EDFA/FRA systems. A formula for quantum noise accumulated during transmission is formalized, and calculations using the derived formula quantitatively indicate how the quantum-limited distance increases with the FRA ratio. |
