A reaction attack is a realistic attacking method that can reveal the secret key of TFHE, a widely recognized fully homomorphic encryption scheme. In a reaction attack, an adversary sends modified or forged ciphertexts to a legitimate receiver, and try to learn secret information such as a key by observing the reaction of the receiver. In this attack, the receiver plays the role of an oracle, and the efficiency and the effectiveness of the attack is measured by the number of queries that are sent to the oracle. This study proposes a new reaction attack by improving the search algorithm that is used in existing attacks, and shows that the proposed attack needs less number of queries than those existing attacking schemes. The paper also discusses the number of queries from the information theoretic aspects, and shows that the number of queries necessary to complete a reaction attack is lowerbounded by the entropy of the plaintext and the noise of THFE. It is also shown that the proposed attacking method almostly achieves this lowerbound and thus is optimum among all reaction attacks. |
