To efficiently increase network capacity, it is crucial to accelerate signal rates per wavelength and densify wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. However, in high-speed and spectrally efficient systems, spectrum narrowing becomes a critical issue. This challenge can emerge during the generation and reception of high-speed signals due to the limited electrical bandwidth of digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Furthermore, in highly dense WDM systems, spectrum narrowing can be exacerbated by the imperfect filter characteristics of wavelength selective switches (WSSs) at optical nodes. We propose a solution that mitigates spectrum narrowing caused by repeated WSS traversals, using optoelectrical hybrid partial-response spectrum shaping combined with sequence estimation based on recurrent neural networks. Simulations and experiments in ultra-dense WDM systems confirm the effectiveness of this approach. |
