Research on a mechanism that uses vibration to communicate outdoor walking hazards to the visually impaired
Kai Matsuguma, Hiroyuki Nakamura (SIT) WIT2024-17
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study aims to enhance the safety of outdoor walking for visually impaired individuals by conveying potential hazards through vibrations. The research specifically focuses on "transmitting information through vibrations." Three vibration motors were attached to the wrist to deliver information via distinct vibration patterns. The position of the motors indicates the direction of the hazard in order to convey "hazards" on the walking route. In contrast, the distance to the hazard was represented through two different patterns: the intensity of the vibration and the intervals between vibrations. Experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of these vibration patterns. The results demonstrated that the vibration pattern using intervals allowed for more accurate information transmission than the intensity variations pattern.
